40 Bible Verses About Division

Division is one of the enemy’s most effective weapons. When families are divided, they fall apart. When churches are divided, their witness is weakened. When nations are divided, they cannot stand. The Bible has a lot to say about this topic because God cares deeply about unity. He wants His people to be one, just as He and the Son are one.

But division is not always bad. Sometimes, we must divide from sin. Sometimes, we must separate from false teaching. Sometimes, following Jesus means we will be divided from those who reject Him. Jesus Himself said He came to bring a sword, to set family members against each other. This is not because He wants division, but because His truth is so powerful that it forces a choice. People either accept Him or reject Him, and that creates division.

In this study, we will look at forty Bible verses about division. Some will warn us against causing division in the body of Christ. Others will show us that following Jesus will cost us relationships. All of them will point us to the importance of unity in the faith and the need to stand firm in the truth.

Bible Verses About Division

Unity in the Body of Christ

God’s desire for His people is unity. When we look at the early church in the book of Acts, we see believers who were of one heart and mind. They shared everything. They worshipped together. They ate together. They prayed together. This unity was a powerful witness to the world around them. It showed that their faith was real. It showed that Jesus really did change people. The apostle Paul spent a lot of time teaching about unity. He told the Ephesians to make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. He reminded them that there is one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all. This unity does not mean we all agree on everything. It means we are united in the essentials. It means we love each other even when we disagree. It means we put the health of the body above our personal preferences.

Ephesians 4:3-6

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” – Ephesians 4:3-6

Psalm 133:1

“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” – Psalm 133:1

Romans 12:4-5

“For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” – Romans 12:4-5

1 Corinthians 1:10

“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.” – 1 Corinthians 1:10

Philippians 2:2-4

“Then make my joy complete by being like minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” – Philippians 2:2-4

Warning Against Causing Division

While unity is God’s desire, division is a serious sin. The Bible has strong words for those who cause division among believers. Paul warns the Romans to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in their way that are contrary to the teaching they have learned. He tells them to keep away from them. In Titus, he says that a divisive person should be warned once, and then warned a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. This sounds harsh, but it shows how seriously God takes the unity of His church. Division destroys. It hurts people. It ruins the witness of the church. Those who cause division are not acting in love. They are acting out of pride, selfishness, or a desire for control. We must be careful not to be those people. We must also be careful not to follow those people. We must protect the unity of the body.

Romans 16:17-18

“I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them. For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naive people.” – Romans 16:17-18

Titus 3:10-11

“Warn a divisive person once, and then warn them a second time. After that, have nothing to do with them. You may be sure that such people are warped and sinful; they are self condemned.” – Titus 3:10-11

Proverbs 6:16-19

“There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.” – Proverbs 6:16-19

1 Corinthians 11:18-19

“In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval.” – 1 Corinthians 11:18-19

Galatians 5:19-21

“The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” – Galatians 5:19-21

Division Between Light and Darkness

Not all division is bad. There is a division that is necessary and good. It is the division between light and darkness. The Bible tells us that we cannot have fellowship with darkness and light at the same time. They are opposites. They cannot mix. As followers of Jesus, we are called to come out from the world and be separate. We are called to have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness. This does not mean we isolate ourselves from non believers. Jesus ate with sinners. But it does mean we do not participate in their sin. It means we do not compromise our faith to fit in. It means we draw a line. There comes a point where we must say, “I cannot go there. I cannot do that. I cannot be part of that.” This kind of division is holy. It honors God. It protects our hearts.

2 Corinthians 6:14-18

“Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.’ Therefore, ‘Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.’ And, ‘I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.'” – 2 Corinthians 6:14-18

Ephesians 5:11

“Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.” – Ephesians 5:11

1 John 1:5-7

“This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” – 1 John 1:5-7

John 3:19-21

“This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” – John 3:19-21

Romans 13:12

“The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.” – Romans 13:12

Jesus, a Sign That Will Be Opposed

When Jesus was born, Simeon prophesied over Him. He said that Jesus was destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and that He would be a sign that would be spoken against. This is exactly what happened. Jesus divided people. Some worshipped Him. Some wanted to kill Him. His very presence forced a decision. You could not be neutral about Jesus. You either accepted Him as Lord or you rejected Him. The same is true today. Jesus still divides. He divides families. He divides friends. He divides nations. This is not because He wants conflict, but because He is the truth. And the truth always exposes lies. When the light comes, darkness has to flee. When Jesus is proclaimed, people have to choose. This division is painful, but it is also necessary. It shows where people stand. It reveals the hearts of men and women.

Luke 2:34-35

“Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: ‘This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.'” – Luke 2:34-35

John 7:43

“Thus the people were divided because of Jesus.” – John 7:43

John 9:16

“Some of the Pharisees said, ‘This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath.’ But others asked, ‘How can a sinner perform such signs?’ So they were divided.” – John 9:16

John 10:19-21

“The Jews who heard these words were again divided. Many of them said, ‘He is demon possessed and raving mad. Why listen to him?’ But others said, ‘These are not the sayings of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?'” – John 10:19-21

Matthew 10:34-36

“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter in law against her mother in law— a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.” – Matthew 10:34-36

Division in Families

One of the hardest places where division happens is in families. When one person in a family follows Jesus and others do not, it creates tension. Parents may not understand. Children may rebel. Siblings may argue. Jesus warned us about this. He said He came to set a man against his father and a daughter against her mother. He said that a person’s enemies might be the members of their own household. This does not mean we stop loving our families. It means we love Jesus more. It means we follow Him even if our families reject us. It means we accept that our faith may cost us relationships. This is hard. It is painful. But Jesus is worth it. He promised that anyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother for His sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. God sees our sacrifice. He will not forget it.

Matthew 10:34-37

“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter in law against her mother in law— a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household. Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” – Matthew 10:34-37

Luke 12:51-53

“Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother in law against daughter in law and daughter in law against mother in law.” – Luke 12:51-53

Mark 13:12-13

“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” – Mark 13:12-13

Micah 7:6

“For a son dishonors his father, a daughter rises up against her mother, a daughter in law against her mother in law— a man’s enemies are the members of his own household.” – Micah 7:6

Genesis 37:4

“When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.” – Genesis 37:4

Division Over Doctrine

Not all division in the church is bad. Sometimes, we must divide over doctrine. When false teachers arise, we must separate from them. When someone preaches a different gospel, we must not welcome them into our homes or churches. The Bible is clear about this. Paul warned the Galatians that if anyone preached a gospel other than the one they received, let them be eternally condemned. John said that if anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them. This sounds harsh, but it is loving. It protects the flock. It keeps error from spreading. We are not called to be divided over every little disagreement. We should be united on the essentials and gracious on the non essentials. But when the core truths of the faith are at stake, we must take a stand.

Galatians 1:6-9

“I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you to live in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let them be under God’s curse!” – Galatians 1:6-9

2 John 1:10-11

“If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not take them into your house or welcome them. Anyone who welcomes them shares in their wicked work.” – 2 John 1:10-11

Romans 16:17

“I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.” – Romans 16:17

1 Timothy 1:3-4

“As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines any longer or to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. Such things promote controversial speculations rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith.” – 1 Timothy 1:3-4

Titus 1:10-11

“For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain.” – Titus 1:10-11

Healing Divisions Through Forgiveness

When division happens, the only way to heal it is through forgiveness. This is not easy. When someone has hurt us, our natural reaction is to hold onto the pain. We want them to suffer. We want them to pay. But the Bible calls us to something higher. It calls us to forgive as we have been forgiven. Jesus taught us to forgive others, or our Father in heaven will not forgive us. Paul told the Colossians to bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances they may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. This kind of forgiveness is not just saying the words. It is releasing the debt. It is letting go of the right to get even. It is choosing love over hate. When we do this, divisions can heal. Relationships can be restored. The body of Christ can be whole again.

Colossians 3:12-14

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” – Colossians 3:12-14

Ephesians 4:31-32

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” – Ephesians 4:31-32

Matthew 6:14-15

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” – Matthew 6:14-15

Matthew 18:21-22

“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ‘Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?’ Jesus answered, ‘I tell you, not seven times, but seventy seven times.'” – Matthew 18:21-22

2 Corinthians 2:10-11

“Anyone you forgive, I also forgive. And what I have forgiven—if there was anything to forgive—I have forgiven in the sight of Christ for your sake, in order that Satan might not outwit us. For we are not unaware of his schemes.” – 2 Corinthians 2:10-11

The Final Division

The Bible teaches that there will be a final division at the end of the age. Jesus will separate the sheep from the goats. The sheep will go into eternal life, and the goats into eternal punishment. This is the ultimate division. It is the one that matters most. All other divisions are temporary. This one is eternal. This truth should sober us. It should make us examine our own hearts. Are we sheep or are we goats? Have we truly trusted in Jesus, or are we just going through the motions? It should also motivate us to share the gospel. People are heading toward a final division. They will either be with Christ or without Him forever. We have the message that can change their eternal destiny. Let us not keep it to ourselves. Let us warn others. Let us plead with them to be on the right side of the final division.

Matthew 25:31-33

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.” – Matthew 25:31-33

Matthew 25:46

“Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” – Matthew 25:46

Luke 16:26

“And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.” – Luke 16:26

Revelation 20:15

“Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.” – Revelation 20:15

Revelation 21:8

“But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” – Revelation 21:8

Final Thought

As I have read through these verses, I have felt both challenged and comforted. I am challenged because I see how easy it is to cause division without even realizing it. A careless word, a gossipy comment, a judgmental attitude—these things can tear apart the body of Christ. I have to ask God to help me be a peacemaker, not a troublemaker.

But I am also comforted because I see that not all division is my fault. Sometimes, standing for truth will cost me relationships. Sometimes, people will reject me because of Jesus. That is not something to be ashamed of. It is something to rejoice in. Jesus said blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness.

If you are experiencing division in your family because of your faith, I want to encourage you. God sees you. He knows your pain. He will not leave you or forsake you. Keep loving your family. Keep praying for them. But do not compromise your faith to keep the peace. The peace that comes from compromise is false peace. True peace comes from walking with Jesus, even when it is hard.

If you are struggling with unforgiveness toward someone who has hurt you, I want to encourage you to let it go. Not for their sake, but for yours. Unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. It only hurts you. Forgive as you have been forgiven. It is the only path to healing.

If you want to go deeper, I encourage you to read these verses about treating others equally. They will remind you that God is the source of true peace, even in the middle of division. Let us be people who pursue peace and unity, while never compromising the truth.
